Dementia

Dementia - a progressive brain dysfunction, leads to a gradually increasing restriction of daily activities or progressive decline in cognitive function. Particularly affected areas are memory, attention, language and problem solving skills. Later stages of the condition have the afflicted persons not oriented in time, place and person. Less than 10% of all dementias are reversible. Dementia is a non-specific term that encompasses many disease processes, just as fever is attributable to many etiologies. The most well-known type of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Dementia not only affects patients, but also those surrounding them, as most patients require care in the long-term.
