Bacterial Endocarditis: Prevention

In India, bacterial endocarditis is not so uncommon, life-threatening infection of the endothelial surface of the heart, including the heart valves. While anyone can contract endocarditis, it usually develops in those with underlying structural cardiac defects. Patients with prosthetic heart valves, past history of endocarditis (even in the absence of other heart disease), complex cyanotic congenital heart disease or systemic-pulmonary shunts constitute the high-risk category. Those with congenital and acquired cardiac malformations and valvular dysfunction fall into the moderate-risk category. Prophylaxis is particularly important for patients in whom endocardial infection would be most likely to cause severe morbidity or even mortality.
