Conjunctivitis

The symptoms of conjunctivitis include discharge from the eyes, glued eyes in the morning, foreign body sensation, itching, usually associated with an allergic reaction and rarely photophobia. If the patient has a purulent discharge in the eye, the diagnosis is almost certainly bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. In adults, the presence of glued eye(s) in the morning is a strong indicator of bacterial conjunctivitis, whereas itch and a history of conjunctivitis decrease the likelihood of a bacterial cause. Even slightly purulent conjunctivitis (caused by a virus or bacteria) should be treated with antibiotic drops for 3 - 7 days.
