BCG Vaccination

BCG is made of a live, attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis. This stimulates the immune system to protect against tuberculosis. Studies have shown that BCG vaccine gives substantial protection in both school children and newborn infants. Furthermore, protection from BCG is greatest against the more serious forms of the disease such as TB meningitis in children. An induration that develops at the vaccination site 2-6 weeks after the vaccination that may burst and discharge for a few weeks is a normal and desired reaction to the vaccine.
