Psychiatric emergencies

The management of an aggressive patient may be initiated with olanzapine, risperidone, zuclopenthixol acetate, haloperidol or diazepam. The drugs used for depressive patients with insomnia and anxiety is a sedative antidepressant taken in the evening e.g. mirtazapine, Mianserin, trazodone, or a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline or doxepin. For delirium and agitated patient with dementia, haloperidol is the drug of choice.
