Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids refer to the enlargement and prolapse of haemorrhoidal tissue. Symptoms associated with haemorrhoids are common and usually self-limited, but they tend to recur. It is important to take a detailed history and ensure that the presenting complaints are in fact caused by haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids generally cause symptoms when they become enlarged, inflamed, thrombosed, or prolapsed. Conservative treatment includes increasing fiber and liquid intake and retraining in toilet habit. Numerous methods to destroy internal hemorrhoids are available; these includes rubber-band ligation, sclerotherapy injection, infrared photocoagulation, laser ablation, carbon dioxide freezing, Lord dilatation, stapled hemorrhoidectomy and surgical resection.
