Investigation of Atopy

Skin prick tests are the basic method. Tendency for atopy can be screened by testing IgE antibodies towards common inhalation and food allergens. A positive result indicates hypersensitivity and may warrant investigations for specific allergens. A basic series of skin tests is sufficient in most cases of asthma. Extensive or "coming and going" type atopic eczema in an adult calls for investigations. The results of skin prick tests with food allergens must be evaluated critically against the symptoms.
