Heartburn
Gastro oesophageal reflux disease is the most common cause of Heartburn. Heartburn starts about 30 min after meals and upon reclining, with relief after antacids or PPI or H2 receptor blockers. It usually manifests as regurgitation (spontaneous reflux) of sour or bitter gastric contents into the mouth. Upper Endoscopy with biopsy (when abnormal) endoscopy is a must in patients presenting with complications like odynophagia, haemetemesis, anaemia, dysphagia, and elderly patient. PPIs like Pantoprazole 40 mg or Rabeprazole 20 mg PO once a day are administered for 6-8 weeks. Prokinetic medicines like Domperidone are given before meals.
