Cirrhosis of Liver

In cirrhosis the liver cells are replaced by connective tissue. The decrease in functioning liver parenchyma, portal hypertension, and activity of the underlying liver disease determine the severity and prognosis of cirrhosis. Abstinence improves prognosis in alcoholic cirrhosis. If a patient who stops drinking has not had variceal bleeding, jaundice or ascites, cirrhosis does not affect his/her prognosis. A diet rich in energy and protein is needed, because cirrhosis is often associated with malnutrition. No antifibrotic medication is available, but the treatment of the underlying liver disease may halt the progression of cirrhosis. In established severe liver dysfunction, only 50 % survive six months.
