Primary sclerosing cholangitis
Primary sclerosing cholangitis is auto immune form of cholangitis. It leads to cholestasis, leading to jaundice and eventually causes liver failure. The exact aetiology is not known. Common clinical features are fatigue (a non-specific symptom often present in liver disease), severe icterus with intense itching, malabsorption (especially of fat) and steatorrhea, leading to decreased levels of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and signs of cirrhosis. Till date, none of the available treatment modalities has been shown to affect patient survival.
