Postmenopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy

Indications for HRT includes menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, urogenital disorders), prophylaxis of osteoporosis only in patients who have concomitant menopausal symptoms requiring treatment. In other patients, bisphosphonates may be a better option. Treatment is started with a cyclical combined oestrogen/progestogen preparation or with oestrogen, which is given continuously and progestogen is added for the first 12 - 14 days of each calendar month. Tibolone may be used as a bleeding-free treatment form (not within 12 months of last menstrual period). In hysterectomised women oestrogen only is used.
