Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common medical condition where the tissue lining the uterus is found outside of the uterus, typically affecting other organs in the pelvis. Endometriosis only affects women in their reproductive years; symptoms are rarely seen after menopause. Almost 50% of patients with endometriosis suffer from infertility. In endometriosis, either the pain or infertility is treated; it is not possible to treat both simultaneously. Pharmacotherapy aims to prevent the action of oestrogen on the endometrial tissue. Symptoms will return when treatment is withdrawn. Surgical treatment aims to remove any ectopic endometrium and to restore normal anatomy.
