Laparoscopic adhesiolysis in abdominal pain

By Dr Shobhana Mohandas

Laparoscopy is considered superior to laparotomy for treating pelvic adhesions, and several encouraging reports have shown improvement in majority of patients. While operating on patients with extensive omental adhesions, laparoscopy is advantageous as it offers a panoramic view of the abdomen and the available operating space is greater due to pneumoperitoneum. Besides adhesiolysis, laparoscopy could prove to be a useful tool in diagnosing various pelvic pathologies which may be difficult to diagnose with ultrasonography or clinical examination. A negative laparoscopy is also useful in assuring the patients that there is nothing very seriously wrong with her. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis in experienced hands may be the best option for patients with post operative adhesions.
