Pregnancy and Diabetes

Diabetes in pregnancy will manifest either as pregnancy in a woman with known non insulin dependant diabetes mellitus or as Gestational diabetes, which is carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity with its onset or first recognition, after 20 weeks of gestation. Both acute and chronic complications affecting both mother and child are noted during pregnancy and with optimal diabetic control prior to and during pregnancy, complication rates can be reduced. Oral hypoglycaemic drugs are contraindicated and Insulins are the mainstay of management. Strict maternal glycaemic control, clue to complete fetal salvation!
