Safety of Ultrasound in pregnancy
Ultrasound is a mechanical energy in which a pressure wave travels through tissue. Reflection and scattering back to the transducer are used to form the image.Use of ultrasound in pregnancy has come as a boon to the obstetrician, totally changing the practice scenario. No consensus seems to have been reached on how much scanning is permissible in pregnancy. It remains a fact that prolonged exposure at a time can cause thermal damage, an event unlikely at routine scans. Whether repeated exposures can cumulatively cause damage is the point that requires further study.
