Constipation - Approach to a patient

Constipation is a common complaint in practice, with incidence going up from 5% in adults to about 80% in the elderly.

Constipation has several causes, but the cornerstone of treatment is generally the same: more fluids and fibre in the diet and more physical mobility.

Temporary changes in lifestyle, such as travel, may cause constipation that ceases to exist when life goes back to normal. If constipation becomes a persistent complaint, its cause should be determined, and treatment should be started immediately. The longer one has suffered from constipation, the longer it takes to get rid of it.
