Assessment of Anaemia in Adults

Anemia is one of the commonest findings in practice. Anaemia is not a final diagnosis, but a symptom. The underlying cause for this symptom must be determined. A patient with anaemia may have no symptoms at all and may go undetected or present with vague symptoms like feeling of weakness or tiredness, drowsiness. Shortness of breath is reported in severe cases. Very severe anemia can cause palpitations. Elderly people may present with heart failure. In every patient with anaemia the physician should assess the patient to answer these three questions:

  • What is the type of anaemia?
  • What is the mechanism of anemia?
  • What is the diagnosis: the pathophysiology and underlying cause of the anaemia?
