Megaloblastic anaemia

In Megaloblastic anaemia, erythrocytes are larger and have higher nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratios compared to normoblastic cells. Megaloblastic anaemias can be caused by cobalamin deficiency or folate deficiency. Drugs can cause megaloblastic anaemia. A typical patient with megaloblastic anaemia presents with macrocytic anaemia with thrombocytopenia and a decreased reticulocyte count. Most patients with megaloblastosis are treated with cobalamin and folate therapy to treat deficiencies in these substances. Transfusion therapy should be restricted to patients with severe, uncompensated, and life-threatening anaemia.
