Acute leukaemia

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow and is characterized by an abnormal proliferation of leukocytes. Normal bone marrow cells are replaced with higher numbers of immature leucocytes and lower number of platelets. Patients present with easy bruising, bleed excessively or develop petechiae. The diagnosis of leukaemia can only be made on the basis of bone marrow examination. AML (including its subtypes) is still considered as its own group of diseases. ALL on the other hand is grouped together with lymphomas as "precursor B- and T-cell neoplasms".
