Colorectal Cancer

Patients with colorectal cancer commonly present with changes in bowel habits (change in frequency, quality or consistency of stools). Blood in stools, rectal bleeding, stools with mucus and melena are other presentations. Digital rectal exam detects tumors large enough to be felt in the distal part of the rectum. A sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy helps visualization and biopsy of the tumour. Treatment consists of wide surgical resection of the lesion with sufficient margins, and radical en-bloc resection of mesentery. Cancer screening is an important aspect of early diagnosis.
