Oesophageal Cancer

Oesophageal cancer usually originates in the mucosa and can develop in the upper, middle, or lower section of the organ. The most common types of esophageal cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Early cancer of the esophagus is usually asymptomatic in as many as 50% of cases, the disease is locally advanced or has already spread (metastasized) at the time of diagnosis. Upper GI endoscopy with biopsy is done for diagnosis. Surgery is possible if the disease is localized, which is the case in 20-30% of all patients. If the tumor is larger but localized, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may be given.
