Diabetic Macroangiopathy
Diabetic macroangiopathy refers to the presence of non-atherosclerotic large vessel disease in diabetic patients. Coronary heart disease is an early complication of type 2 diabetes and newly diagnosed diabetic patients already have 2 - 3 times more often coronary heart disease compared with age-matched non-diabetic persons. The occurrence of cerebrovascular disease and especially that of peripheral arterial disease depends on the duration of the diabetes. High blood pressure, insulin resistance, high serum triglyceride level and low HDL-cholesterol concentration are known risk factors for atherosclerosis among type 2 diabetic patients. Together with central obesity they are the features of metabolic syndrome. The main objective of the treatment is to prevent the development or worsening of vascular complications. The treatment strategy should be targeted at correcting hyperglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and increased coagulability.
