Polycythaemia vera
Polycythaemia Vera (PV) is a stem cell disorder characterized as a panhyperplastic, malignant and neoplastic marrow disorder. The most prominent feature of this disease is an elevated absolute red blood cell mass because of uncontrolled red blood cell production. Symptoms are related to blood hyperviscosity secondary to a marked increase in the cellular elements of blood, which impairs microcirculation The major goal of the treatment is to prevent thrombotic complications and haemorrhages. The red blood cell mass is normalized with phlebotomy as rapidly as clinically possible (250-500 ml every other day). Myeloproliferative activity with is suppressed with chemotherapy
