Sulfasalazine in the treatment of rheumatic diseases
Sulfasalazine (salazopyrin) an anti rheumatic drug is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in both adults and children whose disease has not responded well to other medications. It may also be used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis. Tablets need to be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed. Treatment with sulfasalazine requires close monitoring for side effects by the treating physician.
