Azathioprine: in the treatment of rheumatic diseases
Azathioprine is an immunosupressant effective, alone, in autoimmune disorders eg rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disorders eg Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Along with other immunosuppressants it is also used in organ transplantation. It inhibits purine synthesis, which is necessary for the proliferation of cells, especially leukocytes and lymphocytes. Side effects are uncommon but include nausea and rash. It should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Caution should be exercised when it is used in conjunction with allopurinol.
